I love simple symbols.
I also like repetition.
I find that repeating an image or pattern brings me a sense of peace and calm.
My art is varied as I express how I am feeling or work on whatever comes to mind in the moment, but occasionally, something clicks and I work on a small series for a little while.
Yesterday, I visited the exhibition Basquiat: Boom For Real at the Barbican. The show had been so popular that I was very luck to get one of the last tickets as entry was timed and weekends were already sold out! I felt totally energised by the show, from the moment I entered in. I made a few notes in my pocket sketchbook, but one page from a book inspired me to create my first Heart Art painting (above) in this little postcard series. On lined paper were the handwritten words,
“LOVE IS A LIE
LOVER = LIAR”
As I read, I tend to hear the words in my head and what I heard in my head instead was “LOVE IS ALIVE”. I noted this down in my pocket sketchbook and created this first little piece on my return home. It felt good to paint, so I made more. This evening, whilst watching some fantastic art videos, I painted and painted. Fragments of the works on the screen inspired my cards this evening. The first (with stars was inspired by a tiny element of a huge painting by Chinese artist Sun Xun and whilst listening to a programme on Yayoi Kusama, I found myself creating the dotty heart painting. The paintings are imperfect, but anyone who has ever tried to make art or ever been in love or will know that you can’t get it right all the time!
So today, I am sharing my imperfect Heart Art with you and offering it for sale should you wish to share your heart with someone as we approach Valentine’s Day. Each work has been created on an A6 acid-free watercolour postcard (148 x 100mm), using Winsor and Newton watercolour paints.
These original hand-painted postcards are £12 each including first class postage and packing within the UK. They come in a clear plastic sleeve, with cardboard inside the envelope to protect them. For postage outside the UK, please contact me with your address for rates. Additional postcards sent at the same time – or any collected rather than posted – are just £10 each.
Rather than listing each work individually and creating individual PayPal codes, please drop an email to email@example.com letting me know which postcard you would like to purchase and I will make them available on a first come first served basis. If you see one with a space at the bottom, let me know which word you would like me to add to “Love Is…”
